I watched open-mouthed as the cartoon version showed Jehovah's Holy Spirit surround and fill Moses, and Moses' subsequent elation. It is when Moses is on Sinai by God's calling. It fills in some questions, such as: How did Moses first get in touch with his sense of conscience concerning the slaves in Egypt? As did DeMille's.īut one scene hit me to the core: a small moment in the vast epic which DeMille did not portray, at least not with this clarity:
"The Prince of Egypt" is, in a large sense, another Hollywoodish take on Exodus. Like, how is a cartoon version going to measure up to DeMille's? So when I watched this cartoon version, I was stand-offish at first. That literally gave me goosebumps, as I wished I were as close to God as Moses was. DeMille's "The Ten Commandments" whenever it comes on TV, having first seen it in a NYC theater when I was around 16. It is a stand-out example of an animated feature with intense spiritual merit.
I purchased this as a gift for a dear friend, having done so for our family before this. But for those who own a DVD edition, the picture won’t improve drastically, (especially since the DVD is anamorphic widescreen), but if you like the film enough to want a lossless audio presentation, I say take the plunge. Overall I do recommend the Blu-ray edition to anyone who doesn’t already own the film on DVD, it’s a solid presentation of an often-overlooked classic. I feel like the transfer used is one the studio had laying around from past DVD releases, rather than using modern 4K technology to remaster the film to today’s high digital standards. Disney has put out such flawless, breathtaking Blu-ray releases of their animated catalog from around this time, and they look significantly better.

While it makes sense to present the movie this way, given it was originally screened on film, using a transfer from a direct digital master would REALLY make the colors and animation shine beautifully without altering or distorting them. Rather than using a digital master, (which MUST exist given how extensively computer animation is used in this movie), they used an HD transfer of a film master. The video presentation, while respectable, is still a bit disappointing. The epic score and lovingly crafted songs really shine, (although ‘Playing with the Big Boys’ is still a God-awful ‘Be Prepared’ rip-off), and I had fun playing the movie at a loud volume and really immersing myself. The biggest improvement over the DVD version is the sound. This movie was a childhood staple and I’ve owned two DVD editions of it in the past, so I pre-ordered the Blu-ray the moment I heard it was coming out.Īs far as older animated films being released on Blu-ray, the quality of this one falls somewhere in between a Disney Blu-ray and a Don Bluth Blu-ray.
